Charleston our unofficial capital, and certainly THE city that

Party at Palustris!
The Palustris Festival will be held March 25-28, 2010 in Moore County, NC. This first annual event will include concerts, art exhibits, theater productions, tours, lectures and readings.
Don’t miss the birthday celebration for the oldest living longleaf pine in Weymouth Woods. And, don’t forget your golf clubs. You’ll be close to some of the best courses anywhere around.
Hint: This one’s easy on the pocketbook. More than 60% of the events are free. Presented by the Arts Council of Moore County and the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau of Pinehurst, Southern Pines & Aberdeen area.

What is a Palustris, anyway? Taken from Latin, the Pinus palustris (Longleaf pine) is plentiful in this area.

One for the Girls
Pawleys Island, SC: Willbrook Plantation Golf Club was recently ranked 31st by Golf Digest as one of America’s Top 50 Courses for Women. Featured on the award-winning television show, “Nature Scene,” for its peaceful co-existence of golf and nature, it is the only Myrtle Beach area golf course listed among the results. Why is it so perfect for female golfers?
Friendly design, amenities, courteous staff, programs offered and a great atmosphere. But don’t worry, gentlemen. We hear the course is great for the guys as well.

Row, Row,
Row Your Boat
Columbia, SC has been picked as a top retirement location for rowing and sculling enthusiasts. Ranked fifth on a list of 11 US cities by Rower’s Almanac, Columbia was noted for its downtown stretch of Broad River, and 41 miles of rowable water on Lake Murray.
Rating factors included housing costs, state income tax rates, number of restaurants, theatres, libraries and hospitals, types of water and rowing available, number of boathouses and regattas, and the size of the local rowing population. All that’s great, of course, but nobody mentioned the fabulous weather – great for rowing and a million other outdoor activities.

200 NC Civil War Sites Now Open
History enthusiasts will have their hands full, with many sites
accessible to the public for the first time. All are accessible and
interpreted. Trails and regions can be explored at your own pace,
stopping to enjoy the historical and recreational opportunities.
Children will love the experience, while adults will marvel at the
