Negative Unemployment in the Feed and Grain Industry
Recently Feed & Grain Magazine decided to explore the state of employment in the feed and grain business. They interviewed 7 leaders in the business, two recruiters and 5 top industry professionals. I was asked to share my insights regarding the challenges recruiters in this niche presently face. You can check out the article on our website.
I have noticed that it in recent years, top talent has more available options, as the industry is currently facing negative unemployment rates. There is a high demand for people with the right degree or a certain amount of experience. However, there aren't enough qualified talent to fill this role.
This low employment rate does not only affect high level positions, but lower level roles as well. Companies have to compete for qualified candidates. The agriculture industry, despite the abundance of well-paying jobs, is not exactly considered a glamorous career option. There is a lot of physical labor involved and outdoor tasks under the sun or during colder months.
Another factor to consider is relocation. According to the article, this generation is not as ready to relocate as their older counterparts were. Michael Smith, the president and CEO of Ag1Source is quoted saying that "Most mills and most grain facilities are very rural. They need people where the work is; you can't telecommute to this job; you have to relocate there. That need is a challenge because new generations just aren't as willing to relocate as older generations used to be."
With Baby Boomers retiring, the agriculture industry's future seems uncertain. It's not just about recruiting the right person for the job anymore. The Dairy State Helps the Lone Star State
Hurricane Harvey did quite a number on Texas. It is said to be one of the worst natural disasters to hit the United States in recorded history, according to an article in Forbes. Due to the severity of the flooding, many stores had to close down. Luckily, according to The Bullvine, Wisconsin's dairy community decided to lend a helping hand.
The Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, which is funded by the Dairy Farm Families of Wisconsin, coordinated with Wisconsin cheese makers. They sent over 17,000 pounds of cheese to Houston.
On September 1, dairy farmers, cheese factory employees from 26 cheese companies across the state, and WMMB employees gathered together in Madison. They packed a delivery truck with 300 pounds of butter and an assortment of cheese for the residents of Houston.
This was delivered to the Houston Food Bank, the largest one in the nation. It distributes to about 600 relief charities in the Southeast Texas counties. Shipping and logistics were shouldered by Independent Procurement Alliance Program (IPAP), an operation based in Appleton, Wisconsin.

NCC Releases Chicken Guarantees
The National Chicken Council, which is the oldest and largest national association that represents the broiler industry, has released a set of industry-wide standards. According to an article on The Poultry Site, the "Chicken Guarantees" were launched as part of the NCC Chicken Check In program.
U.S. chicken consumption is currently at an all-time high. The Chicken Check In program will provide consumers with the reassurance that a set of standard principles will apply to all the chicken available in the market.
Ashley Petersen, PhD is the NCC Senior VP of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs. She says that "NCC and its members remain wholly committed to advancing chicken welfare, continuous improvement, and consumer choice."
The welfare standards the NCC set ensures that all chickens are raise cage-free. Each chicken must be free of steroids and added hormones, and they are also monitored by licensed veterinarians. Farms that raise these chickens must be trained in animal welfare, as well.
