Dear Members,

Last week I wrote about the People for Progress, which is the 1 cent Sales Tax/ Transportation Initiative in order to have a dedicated source of funding locally, which can be matched by state and federal funds, in order to prepare ourselves for our future transportation needs. On Tuesday, June 27, the Broward County Board of Commissioners voted 5-4 in favor of putting this initiative on the ballot in November so that the voters can decide. We are extremely pleased.

Also last week, we were extremely happy that the City of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County reached a compromise on a very contentious issue regarding the Sistrunk Corridor. We had been supporting the changing the traffic patterns in this district in order to attract and increase commercialization and both parties came to a good compromise.

The Chamber also took a position in support of one of our members, where a group of outsiders were trying to have the City of Fort Lauderdale designate their property, a hotel, as a historical landmark. The hotel is not historic (this was a disguise to stop redevelopment) and by doing this, the City would have been taking away the property rights of the owner to determine what should be done in the future. Fortunately, the City did not approve the historic designation and now the owner can move on.

The point is that your Chamber is active in community issues. Being the Voice of Business is one of our most important roles; but we need your continued support both financially and in support of our positions.

We thank you for that support.

Super Bowl XLI Procurement Process
Super Bowl XLI will be held in Miami on February 4, 2007.  It is the policy of the National Football League (NFL) that minority and women-owned businesses have the maximum opportunity to participate in the Super Bowl procurement process.  The South Florida Super Bowl XLI Emerging Business Program is designed to ensure local minority and women owned businesses are provided with access to these procurement opportunities.  While participation in the program does not guarantee receipt of Super Bowl XLI related contracts, it is the intention of the host committee that interested minority and women owned businesses receive an education in the large event procurement process, an introduction to potential partners and exposure to other procurement opportunities.
