Be curious…look ‘em in the eye
Last night I had the good fortune to attend the Chamber’s Business After Hours at Pazzo’s Cucina Italiana, 1430 SE 17th Street, where over 150 investors and guests gathered in the middle of the summer’s heat to make things happen.
Throughout the room the energy was palpable. I sensed renewed passion, urgency with collegial informality. Working the room I found varying degrees of separation between veteran networkers and those just getting started. Here are my takeaways:
1. Those having a good year have redoubled their efforts to make as much as last year, and it is working.
2. Investors who immediately gave me their business card before even asking permission or saying hello
were generally not having a good year.
3. Three individuals gave me leads for new investors to join the Chamber and they have moved to my “A” list.
4. The company you keep and your professional appearance determine approachability and believability.
5. If you say you will follow up, make sure you do it.
In the end, my best conversations were with individuals who were curious about me and my business, asked probing questions and didn’t stare around the room at all the potential. When it comes to creating first impressions, look ‘em in the eye.
