In this column, we focus on individuals, cultures, special interest and ethnic groups, and their influences and history in the arts and world. This Quarter, we are pleased to spotlight our very own Glenn Macura, a Contemporary and Modern Art Curator and Ann Tanksley a very gifted artist whose work we have recently begun to offer.

Glenn in action during an install.

Glenn strikes a Yoga pose on Deer Isle in Maine...his private spot to do nothing but watch the world go by.
Glenn Macura works magic by day as an art advisor and curator....and by night....Glenn transforms to a Yoga practitioner, where he seeks to curate the body by balancing the Ying with Yang.  Glenn began working in the art world when he moved to NYC in 1984. A former painter with a Masters of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn , Glenn has engaged in all creative and business aspects of the contemporary art world. In addition to working with galleries, museums, corporations, private and public institutions, Glenn also guides private clients in the purchase, development and maintenance of their personal art collections.

Since 1995, Glenn has managed all facets of the Corporate Art Collection for the General Electric Company which has over 3000 works of art.  The GE collection is on view at several locations including facilities in Washington, DC , 30 Rockefeller Plaza, NYC  and GE World Headquarters in Fairfield, CT. In addition to Glenn installing over 20 exhibitions for GE's Corporate Gallery, his other responsibilities include everything from the occasional purchase to upkeep, inventory, evaluation and transportation.

Since 2006, Glenn has partnered with Picture That to curate exhibitions for GE's newly created Cultural Fine Art Gallery . Picture That is proud to have Glenn as a member of its Team.  Together they have curated some of the finest contemporary cultural art exhibitions in today's society.  They also provide art advisory services and manage the fine art collections of several corporations and private clients.

  Artist Ann Tanksley

"Flower Girls" by Ann Tanksley

Ann Tanksley brings the art tender scenes of a fertile culture through her intimate renderings of daily life. Ann's sensitivity to humanity, particularly to her black heritage, portrays a kinship of people with their natural environment. Her works are saturated with vivid abstract symbolism. A well trained awareness is reflected in Ann's successful blending of the simple as the complex, the pure as a mixture, and the real as abstract. Her bold and energetic use of color creates an exotic flavor while she maintains a soft gentle undercurrent with constraining subdued earth tones.

Ann's work is in several permanent collections including: Medgar Evers College of Brooklyn, New York and American Women in Art Album, located at The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC as well as being in the private collections of Oprah Winfrey, Morgan Freeman, Gordon Parks, Susan Taylor and a host of other collectors of note. She is also listed in Who's Who in American Art and 250 Years of Afro-American Art

Picture That is honored to offer works from the portfolio of Ann Tanksley.  She is without question, one of the most important contemporary artists in the 20th century.

In this column, we highlight how our partners have incorporated Picture That solutions to promote cultural inclusion within their environments. In this issue, we bring you examples of how our partners leveraged our services to develop culturally inclusive programs that help them achieve their objectives.

General Electric introduces Art Education to Cultural Fine Art Exhibit Series
Designed to increase cross-cultural learning and networking amongst its employees, an art education component was added to supplement GE's bi-monthly cultural exhibitions.  Installed in GE's Fairfield CT Headquarters since 2007, these cultural exhibits have accompanying online galleries and promote global inclusion throughout the entire company.  The newly added education component also raises awareness of how art is influenced by culture... and how culture is influenced by art.
Artist Ann Tanksley educates members of GE's AAF.              Artist Sungsook Setton provides guided tour to GE's APAF.

The art education components include informative "Artist Talks" with GE employees and invited community guests, guided tours of each exhibition, and networking receptions where employees can "Meet the Artists".  Thus far, employees from GE's African American Forum (AAF), Women's Forum, and Asian Pacific American Forum (APAF) have each sponsored receptions during their respective celebratory months and the programming was well received by all.
Photographer Phyllis Sinrich addresses GE's Women's Forum.                 Japanese Artist Juri Morioka fields questions.

Plans are in the works with GE's Hispanic Forum (HF) and Picture That's curators to feature works by artists from the countries of Mexico, Cuba, Brasil, Puerto Rico and Colombia during Hispanic Heritage Month 2008 (Sep 15 - Oct 15).  We look forward to installing this show and implementing the education components which will be offered in both English and Spanish.  You too can take a virtual tour by visiting  GE's Online Gallery from September 1 through October 30 !

In the coming months, we look forward to sharing more about the unique ways art is being used to enhance the environments of our clients and our awareness of each other.

Relevant Reading for Collectors
By request, we are pleased to add this section of recommended readings for collectors.  Our Summer 2008 pick is Apollo Magazine.
Founded in 1925 and based in the UK, Apollo is one of the world's oldest and most highly respected magazines on the visual arts.  Lord Hindlip, the former Chairman of Christie's shares....."Apollo is the perfect read for anyone who loves works of art. It is intelligent without being pompous, informative but never boring and always beautifully presented."

An article that the Picture That Team enjoyed reading focused on the JP Morgan Chase Art Collection where director, Lisa K Erf, talks about the important role that contemporary art plays in the bank's life.  The Chase Collection also has a traveling exhibition that was shown the Pera Museum in Istanbul and at the International Financial Centre in Dubai this past spring.

Check out Apollo Magazine and send a note to tell us what you think.  Also, if you have recommended readings that you think will be of interest to our fine art collectors, please let us know.
