The Campaign To Save
Wicks Nursery
CLICK HERE TO SAVE WICKS NURSERY
The Wicks Nursery is very important and strategic from a
conservation perspective. As shown on the map below, the property
is contiguous with a number of other previously conserved parcels
within ALT's Center Island Greenway thereby building upon and
enhancing this past conservation work. The parcel is also the last
major undeveloped and unprotected property within the Sisson Pond
Watershed. This open space land provides a natural buffer that
helps protect this important Aquidneck Island water reservoir from
harmful runoff. The subject land has been actively farmed for
generations and is located next to other agricultural lands, many of
which are conserved, thereby ensuring a critical mass of arable land
in this area to sustain agricultural activities into the future. The property primarily contains Prime Farmland Soils as recognized
by the United States Department of Agriculture.

ALT's 2010 Conservation Speaker Series:
Buddy Huffaker of the Aldo Leopold Foundation
Considered by many
as one of the founding fathers of the land conservation movement,
wildlife management and the United States' wilderness system, Aldo
Leopold was a conservationist, forester, philosopher, educator, writer
and outdoor enthusiast. Leopold's A Sand County Almanac, first
published in 1949, sold over 2 million copies and established him as
one of the most influential conservation thinkers of the twentieth
century. The Aldo Leopold Foundation, established by Leopold's five
children, is the primary advocate and interpreter of the Leopold
legacy. As Executive Director of the foundation, Buddy Huffaker will
help participants understand how Leopold's vision and values continue
to influence the conservation movement.
