This
is probably the most exciting time to be considering a new car
because for the first time, electric and electric/gas hybrids are widely
available at fair competitive prices - but could an electric car
be in your future? If GM, Ford, Toyota, Honda, Nissan and
Tesla are to be believed, then yes. But it's not just these
companies that are desperately working to deliver sustainable
electric powered vehicles, many entrepreneurial companies are
working on everything from extended
batteries to control units. more
Cars
from Silicon Valley
Perhaps one of the most
interesting players in the electric car race has to be Tesla
Motors - interesting because they are not a traditional car
manufacturer looking to enter the EV space but rather a Silicon
Valley start-up bent on getting the world off oil. Tesla co-founder Elon
Musk spent the better part of his PayPal fortune getting Tesla
off the ground. Later he secured a loan from Daimler, The US
Dept. of Energy and $225m from the 2010 IPO (the first automaker
IPO since Ford in 1956). more
All
electric or bust
Nissan's Carlos
Ghosn was
responsible for bringing the Nissan Leaf to market - to date the only
mass-market EV available in world. Ghosn was able to
leverage a $1.5b loan - part of the $25b Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program authorized by Congress in 2007
- to build a new
factory to produce Li-Ion batteries for the Leaf. more
Will
Volt Outlast EV1
The EV1 was the
first purpose-specific electric car built by GM between 1996 and
1999. The EV1, available only on lease was recalled in 2003
and the cars were crushed
and destroyed. A lot of people with long memories will be
looking hard at GM and the Volt before going down that road again. more
"The
Revenge Of The Electric Car"
"Revenge",
follows Chris Paine's 2006 "Who Killed The Electric Car"
and is a startling romp through the auto industry, closely
following the lives of four individuals and their dreams for EV
dominance on the world's roads. more
