Chinese, English and Spanish are the languages of the future
Mexican musician and writer Carlos Prieto has presented a study on the origins of the world’s languages, which he said will decrease in number from 6,000 to 2,000 by the end of the 21st century. According to his calculations, “four languages disappear per month, and so at the end of the 21st century there could be between 2,800 and 2,000 left, with Chinese, English and Spanish accounting for almost 90 percent of the world’s speakers.”
According to the author, this latest work, titled “Cinco mil años de palabras” (5,000 Years of Words), is unlike other books on languages in that he has sought to focus more on the past in his research.
