One of the most serious criminal episodes in the history of Mexico is the murder of more than four hundred women in Ciudad Juarez over the last decade: a truly bloody harvest of women. The victims are workers, immigrants, usually newcomers with low social and economic conditions. They’re sexually assaulted, mutilated, and murdered. Their bodies turn up days, weeks, or even months after reported missing. It seems that nobody cares about them.

LIBER 2007 a resounding success
The LIBER 2007 international book fair, which was inaugurated at Barcelona’s Palau de Congressos in a ceremony presided over by Spain’s Crown Prince Felipe and his wife, Princess Letizia, and featured Peru as guest of honor, was a resounding success.
Some 700 publishing houses and book industry companies from 17 countries took part from Oct. 2-4 in this year’s edition of the fair, considered the most important event of its kind in the Spanish-speaking world.

Mido Editores announced the September 15 th launch of the premiere issue of PRL, Primera Revista Latinoamericana de Libros. PRL is a Spanish language bimonthly periodical that features compelling book reviews from the most esteemed writers in the Latin American market.
 

FEDECALI, Iberia agreement to reduce cost of transporting books, educational materials by air
The LIBER book fair has served as the setting for the signing of an agreement between Iberia Cargo and Iberia Pasaje and the Spanish Federation of Book Chambers, or FEDECALI, an accord that will result in considerable reductions in rates charged by Iberia to transport books and educational materials to international destinations.
On Oct 4, at Sala D of Fira de Barcelona’s Palace 2, FEDECALI President Jordi Úbeda; Alfonso Fuertes, representing Iberia Cargo; and Iberia Pasaje’s Luis Jiménez-Cassina signed the agreement, which will be in effect until September 2008.
Catalan culture to be on display in Frankfurt in some 140 activities
Catalan Culture, the guest of honor at this year’s edition of the Frankfurt Book Fair, will be on display at that event and throughout the city through roughly 140 literary and academic activities. The head of the literary program, Carles Torner, said it will be organized around three central axes: “readings of Catalan classics translated into German, in-person readings by contemporary authors whose work has also been translated into German and discussions between Catalan and German authors.”

Hispanic Heritage Month 2007: Sept. 15 – Oct. 15 
During Hispanic Heritage Month, America celebrates the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
In September 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week, which was observed during the week including Sept. 15 and Sept. 16. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a monthlong celebration (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15).

ARS enjoys successful appearance at LIBER
 
America Reads Spanish, a campaign to promote Spanish-language books in the United States, enjoyed one of its most successful stops to date during the recently concluded LIBER international book fair in Barcelona. Fifty U.S. librarians invited by ARS attended the event, as well as 25 U.S. distributors whom ARS assisted with a travel grant. ARS organized 800 meetings between publishers and U.S. librarians and distributors at the fair.
