(The

Alex
Rovira and Francesc Miralles
This
charming fable illustrates the importance of knowing oneself, the

Spain’s
2008 Book Plan for the U.S. market unveiled
The 2008 Book
Plan for the U.S. market – an initiative of the Spanish
Institute of Foreign Trade (ICEX) and the Spanish Federation of
Publishers’ Guilds (FGEE) – includes new features
that will fortify and revitalize a successful and innovative program
that both organizations have been carrying out for several years to
promote Spanish-language books in the United States.
“We’re
going to launch new business strategies in 2008 that boost the presence
of Spanish-language books in the United States. In doing so,
we’ll rely on relevant information from the BISGE study on
the size of the Spanish-language book market in the U.S, a real
industry first,” said Belén Cristino, trade
commissioner at the Trade Commission of Spain in Miami.

ICEX holds successful seminar
on e-books
The
Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade, or ICEX, held a successful seminar
on Nov. 14 in Barcelona and Nov. 15 in Madrid titled
“Electronic Books: Type of Demand and Marketing Channels in
the United States.” Admission to the event, which attracted
close to a hundred participants due to the interest aroused in the
sector, was free of charge.
The
goals of the seminar were to offer Spanish publishers a broad and
detailed look at the type of e-books American libraries need and the
way they acquire them, as well as to inform them about the size of the
market for this technology in the United States and how Spanish
publishing companies can make inroads.

Ortega’s “1,080 Recipes” going global
After selling
like hotcakes for 35 years in Spanish, Simone Ortega’s
“1,080 recetas” (1,080 Recipes), considered the
“Bible” of Spanish cooking, has begun conquering
the English-speaking world and will be released in French, German and
Italian in 2008.
Though
maintaining its original title for marketing purposes, the new edition
of this Alianza Editorial bestseller – now being launched in
English in Britain, the United States and Australia by the Phaidon
publishing house – “is a book that has been
reworked, revised and brought up-to-date, with the recipes made a
little bit more current,” the book’s co-author,
Inés Ortega, said.

Pérez-Reverte
publishes “documentary book” about Spanish War of
Independence
A
new novel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte that recounts the May 2,
1808, Madrid uprising against the French occupation and which the
author describes as “a documentary book” is now
available in Spanish bookstores.
The
writer said that “Un día de
cólera” (A Day of Rage), a 400-page novel, portrays
in an “unusual way” the “Dos de
Mayo” uprising, an event that sparked the 1808-1814 Spanish
War of Independence, or Peninsular War, that pitted an alliance of
Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom against the expansionist regime
of France’s Napoleon Bonaparte.

Affleck
Actor
Although he is
better known as an actor and celebrity who dated (and practiced Spanish
with) Gwyneth Paltrow and was on the verge of marrying Jennifer Lopez,
35-year-old Ben Affleck’s lone Oscar is the Best Original

ARS provides
useful information at ACTFL Annual Convention
America Reads Spanish (ARS)
has successfully taken part in the ACTFL Annual Convention and World
Languages Expo for the second time. Its Information Pavilion at this
year’s fair proved very useful for distributing the
“Essential Guide to Spanish Reading” among
university professors and high school teachers. Both the university
faculty and the public school teachers took advantage of the occasion
to gather useful information for their libraries and for library
directors needing to stock up on material in Spanish, which thus far
has proved difficult for them to acquire.
