(The
Tales of Beedle the Bard)
J. K.
Rowling
The
Tales of Beedle the Bard, a Wizarding classic, first came to Muggle
readers’ attention in the book known as Harry Potter and the
Deathly Hallows. Now, thanks to Hermione Granger’s
new translation from the ancient runes, we present this stunning
edition with an introduction, notes, and illustrations by J. K.
Rowling, and extensive commentary by Albus Dumbledore.

El jardín devastado
(The Ravaged Garden)
Jorge
Volpi
Short as it is, this
extraordinarily developed novel by the ever intriguing Mexican author
Volpi (Looking for Klingsor) packs an expansive cultural and temporal
punch. It transports readers among Iraq, Mexico, and various university
towns of the Eastern seaboard where the semiautobiographical narrator
finds himself exiled, all the while moving between the real and
abstract spiritual realms.

(The
Fiction of Fidel)
Zoé

Maruja Torres
wins Spain’s Nadal novel prize
Not even the
irreverent humor or loquacious wit of Maruja Torres, winner of the 2009
edition of the Nadal novel prize for “Esperadme en el
cielo” (Wait for Me in Heaven), could brighten the mood
surrounding Spain’s oldest and arguably most prestigious
literary honor.
The awarding of
this year’s Nadal, which includes an 18,000-euro cash prize,
took place in an atmosphere hovering between mourning and homage. The
person who was to pass the baton to Torres was no longer there; author
Francisco Casavella, winner of last year’s edition, died on
Dec. 17 at the age of 45.

Spain’s
most voracious readers under age of 14
Naiara is 10
years old and not a week goes by in which she does not read two or
three books, a “vice” – that of reading
– that this Madrid resident shares with 81.9 percent of
Spanish children between 10 and 13, the country’s top age
group for that activity.
That high
percentage was confirmed – for the sixth consecutive quarter
– in a survey of reading and book-buying habits conducted by
the Spanish Federation of Book Publishers’ Guilds (FGEE),
which discovered that the reading rate for the population over the age
of 14 stood at of 53.9 percent.

The
Biggest Sellers of 2008
Eight
books stood out this year as big successes in the Spanish publishing
industry. Almost nine million copies have been sold among them, taking
into account only the Spanish-language versions.
Four
were predestined for success thanks to the authors’ name: Ken
Follett’s “World Without End”; Arturo
Pérez-Reverte’s “Un día de
cólera” (A Day of Anger); J.K. Rowling’s
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”; and Carlos
Ruiz Zafón’s “El juego del
ángel” (The Angel’s Game). The other four
books were John Boyne’s “The Boy in the Striped
Pyjamas”; Roberto Saviano’s
“Gomorra”; Stephanie Meyer’s
“Twilight” series; and Stieg Larsson’s
“Millennium” crime trilogy.
