On Friday, April 21st at 7:30pm, before the projector starts reeling out this year's hilarious Opening Night film, Reinas (Queens), the stage of the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts welcomes an incredible duo to kick off the 8th annual Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival with lots of sabor! Legendary Latin American star Charytin (above, left) joins forces with Miami's own beloved drag queen Adora (above right) as our 2006 Opening Night Divas of Ceremonies.
In keeping with the theme of Reinas (Queens), which stars an incredible cast of Latina divas from Spain and Argentina, including Carmen Maura, Marisa Paredes, Verónica Forqué, Mercedes Sampietro and Betiana Blum, our 2006 Divas will kick off the 8th annual MGLFF with skits and songs that bring the legend of "La Rubia de America", Charytin, and the unstoppably outrageous Adora together with full-color, over-the-top life!
The singer and comedienne Charytin is a star of screen and stage whose nothing-but-hits career has included chart-topping songs, a long-running hit television variety show and sold-out concerts throughout Latin America, Europe, and Asia. She can currently be seen as host of Telefutura's internationally televised daily talk show, El Escándalo del Mediodia.
Joining Charytin on stage is over the top drag performer, Adora, whose been entertaining throngs of Miami audiences for over 15 years with a repetoire of songs by La Lupe, Maria Callas, Yma Sumac and others. In 2005 she was chosen as Best Drag Queen by Miami New Times and her outrageous and unique look inspired a recent photographic exhibit at a local gallery.
The cast of Reinas (Queens).
An All-Star comedy sure to blow the roof off the Gusman Center!
In Reinas (Queens), 20 gays & lesbians are marrying their partners of their lives on the first day it is legal in
Spain
! But before the boys tie the knot, some of their mothers (played by some of the biggest Divas of Spanish cinema) have a few things to work out. The incredible cast features actress and president of the Spanish Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, Mercedes Sampietro (Inconscientes), and legendary Almodovarian muses Carmen Maura (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), Veronica Forque (Kika), Marisa Paredes (All About My Mother), in this all-star comedy. Directed by Goya-award winning writer/director Manuel Gomez Pereira, who is travelling from Madrid to attend the screening in person & discuss the film with the audience.
